Prolata: From Steel to Steel
Associação Prolata de Reciclagem (or Prolata Recycling
Association) has opened its first model recycling center
in São Paulo, after investing R$ 1 million from 15 Abeaço
(short in Portuguese for Brazilian Steel Packaging Asso-
ciation) member companies*.
October 29 saw Associação Prolata de Reciclagem —a
non-profit organization engaged in the business of
recycling steel containers after consumption— introdu-
ce the Prolata Recycling Center. The initiative is backed
by the Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers
(known for short in Portuguese as Abrafati), Abeaço’s
partner in this venture.
With capacity to receive and recycle up to 2,000 tons
per months, the center sorts, compresses and ships out
the metal for steel companies to process it into new
sheet metal. “We are really excited to open our first
such center, which is designed to cover all stages of
the reverse logistics process through effective actions,
investment, and technical and operational support. The
idea behind Prolata Recycling is to spread awareness
of the recycling of empty steel packaging materials,
while stimulating curbside recycling. The result will be
shared responsibility for the steel packaging life cycle.
Steel cans are part of every Brazilian’s day-to-day life
and pack a huge variety of products. Every steel can
is 100-percent recyclable, and what is more, it is also
infinitely so, because steel neither loses any of its pro-
perties nor suffer any kind of contamination during the
process,” says Prolata Association’s chairperson José
Maria Granço.
This leads to reduced consumption of fresh rawmaterial
and, in so doing, to sustainability. “Steel companies,
for their part, save energy and other costs which had
been inherent in the process up until now. By late 2014,
the program will benefit 50 cooperatives spread over
Brazil’s 12 World Cup host cities. Over the next 10 years,
we intend to recycle 60 percent of all steel packaging
products, but our actual goal is to reach 100 percent.
Therefore, we need everybody’s cooperation,” Granço
says.
As an honorary member, Abeaço contributes its experience
to the development of Prolata activities. “Prolata operates
as an enabler of the conventional reverse logistics system.
Consumers can bring their empty steel packaging products
directly to our centers or to the cooperatives and scrap
yards that have adhered to the program. Retailers need to
first become members in order to adhere to the program
through the association,” says Abeaço’s executive manager
Thais Fagury.
During the event, Abrafati’s chief executive officer Dilson Fer-
reira congratulated the partner association on the initiative,
emphasizing its grand scale: “The opening of this recycling
center is a milestone for the packaging industry. We are
aware of the challenges that will be facing it along the way,
including in its relationship with governmental authorities
and the various steps of the supply chain. On behalf of the
paint industry, I thank you for this excellent job. Congratu-
lations to the sponsors and supporters.”
Ferreira also points out that Abrafati works for the industry’s
sustainable development and, accordingly, is entirely in
favor of new consumption habits. “While we don’t want
consumers to buy any more than they need, we acknowledge
the importance of having a more demanding, selective and
well-informed society to choose eco-friendlier brands, pro-
ducts and services, thus ensuring a better future for future
generations,” he concludes.
The Union of São Paulo State Paint and Coating Manufactu-
rers, known for short as Sitivesp, also supports the initiative.
