well-positioned to reduce our power and drinking water
consumption, all in line with the sustainability after which
we aspire. One other improvement will be our capacity
expansion for paints, coatings and wood finishes and
adhesives and the Iguatu resins, as well as the expansion
of our distribution of DuPont titanium dioxide and our
coil coating and specialty finishes for aluminumand other
metal packaging materials,” says Elaine.
The change will be completed by May 2014 and has been
planned to be implemented in such a manner as to cause
no interruptions in either production or customer service.
Upon completion of this integration, the Santo André site
will be the largest production unit of AkzoNobel’s Perfor-
mance Coatings business. “This investment is going to
make this site AkzoNobel Performance Coatings’ largest
production unit in Brazil. The Performance Coatings busi-

and Sikkens brands), Marine & Protective Coatings (Inter-
national brand), Powder Coatings (Interpon and Resicoat
brands), and Industrial Coatings (Coil Coatings, Packaging
Coatings and Wood Finishes and Adhesives, including the
Iguatu resins). We can say that we expect to triple our
production capacity,” Elaine says.
All of themoves AkzoNobel has beenmaking inBrazil con-
sider the size of the Brazilian market, and the company’s
goal is to double its turnover by 2015 (from 2010 results),
when it should total R$ 4 billion.

Abrafat i Holds Dinner Party and Presents
Coatings Science Awards
December 11 saw Abrafati hold its traditional year-end dinner
party at Clube AtléticoMonte Líbano, in São Paulo, whichwas
attended by important personalities of the paint and coatings
industry.
On the occasion, Antônio Carlos Lacerda, chairman of Abra-
fati’s management board, provided an overview of the year
and said 2014 will be a better year than 2013. “The decorative
paint market got off to a slow start last year, whichwas clearly
the year of standard paints. The automotive coatings market
started out very strong, but is at a slow pace at the end of the
year. The production of motor vehicles grew 12 percent (YTD
November). Sales are flat, and inventories have grown to 41
days, when the average should be 29 to 30 days. Automotive
refinish coatings continue being favored by people’s wish to
keep their cars looking fresh and by the large number of new
cars being driven by inexperienced drivers. Here, it is important
to point out the professionalization process that body shops
have gone through and the growing influence that insurance
companies exert on the supply chain, as they demand highly
competitive prices with no compromise on quality.”
Lacerda’s overview covered industrial coatings as well. “This
