Surfactants play a very important role in the formulation of paints and their features are directly linked to their chemical nature. There are currently several surfactant technologies, each offering a different kind of attribute for the formulation of paints and coatings. “The main requirements that must be taken into account when choosing a surfactant are: leveling, substratewetting, foamstabilization, adhesion between layers and surface slip. All these features are present in surfactants, but themost relevant to themarket, especially aqueous paints, are low foaming and excellent substrate wetting,” points out Marlon Braidott, BASF Additives Technical Advisor for South America. This segment is also quite mature, and paint and coating for- mulators recognize the properties of these inputs and their importance in the production process and in the final quality of the products, says Everton LuisMarion, Coating Additives Line BusinessManager at Evonik Brazil. “Proper understanding of a surfactant’smechanisms of actionbrings growthopportunities for innovative products. Choosing the right agent is crucial to prevent unwanted side effects such as foam stabilization.” (Parte 2) COLORIMETRY - ACCURATE COLOR QUALITY CONTROL Today there is a great need for color measurement and stan- dardization, whichmakes colorimetry equipment increasingly used, especially in the paint industry. The need and practice of measuring and standardizing colors to ensuremore assertive and cost-effective processes is sprea- ding across various industry sectors in general. This is not only the case with large companies, but it is a practice that is also being adopted by medium and small entrepreneurs, aiming at improving production through technology. “And the main reason for this is: the volume per liter of batches is decreasing and the number of batches of different colors is increasing, and this requires greater development efficiency. For example, five years ago there was no talk about return on investment in small batches and overloading the area of development was common in smaller industries. But today, the competition demands development speed and quick response in custom color production. All our releases are in this direction,” says Alexandre Zerbatto, General Manager of X-Rite Pantone Brazil. For Ricardo Lovetro, CEO of Datacolor Brazil, the colorimetry segment has been growing by the year in Brazil. “Colorimetry today is one of the prime andmost necessary investments, that enable the customer flexibility, cost andwaste reduction, and quality regardless of the company size. We have served the entire paint market because the return on investment (ROI) is assured and fast. In addition, technology is increasingly ad- vanced and even allows communication between paint stores, development labs and the marketing department. New tools for measuring color are becomingmore accessible every day.” PAINT & PINTURA FORUMS HIT 5,000 REGISTERED ATTENDEES The Paint & Pintura Forums, since they started in 2011, have only been bringing excellent results to the paint and coatings industry. Altogether, 43 editions were carried out for a total of 5,137 registered attendees, professionals who increasingly seek knowledge and updates on the latest innovations in raw materials and equipment. According to a survey conducted by Agnelo Editora’s polling team, there was a large increase in attendance in the forums during the last two years. In 2019, Joinville, Santa Catarina grew 56 percent in public; Recife, Pernambuco was up 46 percent; Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul up 24 percent; and Vitória, Espírito Santo up 11 percent. Last year, when six forums were held, growth in attendance at these forums was recorded as well, with Campinas, São Paulo reporting an increase of 35 percent in attendance; Criciúma, Santa Catarina up 14 percent; Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul up 13 percent; Londrina, Paraná and Fortaleza, Ceará up 7 percent; and Goiânia, Goiás up 6 percent. With these results, Agnelo Editora’s CEO Agnelo de Barros Neto noted how assertive the publishing house was with this initiative to bring information to regions that demandedmuch knowledge of what happens in theworld of coatings. “In these eight years conducting the regional forums, we realized how much we were on the right track once again. We had a great growth in attending audiences by region. This represents a vic- tory for us and a goal achieved, which is to bring to the largest number of professionals themost innovative of developments in and for the coatings industry. Since then, the numbers have been growing. In the South region, for example, we have had as many as 1,620 registered attendees. In the Northeast there were 1,456 attendees, in the Southeast region we had 1,390 registered attendees, and in the Midwest we had 671. We will continue to increase these numbers and fulfill our missionwith the Brazilian market.” Later this year, Agnelo Editora will hold two more foru- ms, one in Curitiba, Paraná, on September 12, and now in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, on November 6 and 7. Shortly, the cities where the 2020 forums are going to be held will be announced. CELEBRATION - PPG CELEBRATES 45 YEARS OF PROTECTING AND COLORING BRAZIL PPG’s story in Brazil began in 1973, with a small office in the city of São Paulo, where it imported and sold products from the head office (located in Pittsburgh, PA) in the domestic glass and chemical market. Over time, the company gained ground
