CORROSION INHIBITORS -PROTECTIONFORVARIOUS
SUBSTRATES
The extremely important part they play in the paint and
coatings industry is completely described by their name:
corrosion inhibitors. And nowadays, the innovations in
theseproducts are focusedon ensuring long-term corro-
sionprevention,aswellasabilitytobeappliedontovarious
substrates and be providedwith different quality levels
andperformancevalues,while featuringa lowcontentof

It isallbutcertainthatsomematerialswillsufferacorrosion

Ferro sales supervisorDenisonNovak says chromatepigments
used tobemore broadly used toprovide long-term corrosion
protection. “Due to toxicological issues and growing environ-
mentalrestrictions,thetrendoverthepastfewdecadeshasbeen
towardsreplacingthosepigmentswithnon-toxicproducts.This
trendhasbeendrivingthedevelopmentofmodifiedzinc-based
products,whichcanbeused to replacechromatepigments.At
a second stage, which is actually happening almost inparallel,
zinc-freepigmentsarealsobeingdeveloped forbeingenviron-
mentally friendlier.”
AndréVillani, Grace’s regional salesmanager for the Southern
Cone region inLatinAmerica“Usersof all sortsofmetal items
expect not only those products to be durable and as low-
maintenance as canbe, but also thematerials that areused in
their construction to be harmless to both human health and
theenvironment.Manufacturershavebeenfacedwiththechal-
lenge of providingmore andmore durable coatings featuring
improvedweathering and corrosion protection properties, all
without resorting, though, to any harmful substances. Silica-

Theconstant increase inplasticpackagingconsumptionbythe
paint and coatings industry has been quite significant. “Plas-
tic pails and drums have become extremely competitive. By
now, these typesofcontainersaremore thanprovenandalso
preferred by end consumers, according to a survey recently
conducted.Majorpaintmanufacturersstill facesomedifficulty
adjusting their production processes to plastic pails because
their automated lines are set up to runwith cans, but they’re
