PAINT & PINTURA
São Paulo, São Paulo; Aparecida
de Goiânia, Goiás; and Vitória de
Santo Antão, Pernambuco.
The Support Business Unit, also
implemented in 2008, comprises
purchasing, finance, accounting,
marketing, people management,
quality, environment, controller-
ship, logistics, information technol-
ogy, communication, and projects.
In 2010, Anjo’s production in-
vaded its Vitória de Santo Antão,
PE branch, where printing inks
are now being produced to serve
customers in Brazil’s Northeastern
flexo and gravure market.
In his interview with Paint & Pin-
tura, available in Portuguese only,
Anjo’s CEO tells us how his business
became a national benchmark.
Wetting Agents - Eco-friendly
evolution
The market in wetting agents is
evolving and keeps on seeking new
technologies to enhance coatings
performance. The related demand
for enhanced-performance prod-
ucts has increased considerably
aiming at optimized production
and improved product quality,
as well as meeting the need for
products with a strong eco-friendly
appeal.
Used in all sorts of paints and
coatings and playing a key role in
their formulations, wetting agents
are tenso-active and act on the
interface between solid and liquid.
In paint formulations, that interfa-
ce is between pigment and vehicle.
These additives are used to allow
the pigment surface to be wet,
thereby favoring the breaking of
chunks into smaller particles and
paving the way for the dispersant
to act, which results in change in
some paint properties, such as gloss
and tinting power. Wetting agents
can also be used as dispersants. In
addition to their effect on pigment
surface in paint formulations, wet-
ting agents also wet the substrate
to which the paint will be applied,
which property reflects in the spre-
ading and leveling of the coating.
The main benefits provided by wet-
ting agents include assisting in the
process of properly dispersing and
wetting pigments or fillers, preven-
ting cratering on the application of
paint to contaminating substrates
and improving paint adhesion to
the substrate. In a nutshell, wetting
agents are the ingredients which
impart quality to the dispersion
because that act chemically on the
surface of pigments to make it fully
encapsulated, driving the full opti-
cal and colorimetric development
of the pigment, while stabilizing
such properties for a long time. The
more quality the paint formulation,
the more needed is a good and ap-
propriate wetting additive.
Found in all kinds of paints, from
water-based to solvent-based
formulations, wetting agents are
added directly to the system, and
are also extremely important in the
making of pigment concentrates.
Oils & Derivatives - Products
from renewable sources on the
rise
The growing need for using envi-
ronmentally friendly raw materials
coming from renewable sources has
been strengthening the position of
vegetable oils and derivatives in the
paint industry.
The paint industry is growing at
a fast pace and, as in other indus-
tries, innovation is always welco-
me, and one of the main focuses
of innovation today is the envi-
ronment, as the demand grows for
eco-friendly paints formulated with
raw materials of plant origin, whe-
ther for application in building and
construction, in synthetic enamels
and oil-based decorative paints, or
in the automotive industry, among
others.
The consumption of oils and deriva-
tives in the paint industry increased
sharply in 2010. The fast growth
in construction and auto making
contributed a lot to the increase in
consumption volumes. The paint
industry’s sales, for example, were
around USD 3.5 billion in 2009, and
then climbed up to USD 4.5 billion
in 2010, which represents an incre-
ase of nearly 30 percent.
Industry in the Spotlight -
Responsiveness and efficiency
Additiva was founded in 2004, and
after a tough two initial years, the
company evolved to establish itself
as a chemical distributor in 2008.
The expansion of Additiva’s product
range from its primary partner
BASF and the company’s constant
search for international deals have
enabled it to provide a comprehen-
sive solution package in chemicals.
“Our outsourced integrated logistics
is highly qualified to handle, store
and transport chemicals. Working
perfectly in sync with our partner
has bolstered the new concept of
outsourced logistics,” says Mar-
cos Antonio Bresolin, director at
Additiva.
Formulators, household cleaning
products and coatings are the key
markets served by Additiva. The
coatings market accounts for 30
percent of the company’s annual
sales, and its strategies for those
customers include expanding the
product range they are provided
