Regulations - Amendment to 15079 Standard
The NBR 15079 standard provides for a classification
of decorative paints into three levels: Economy, Stan-
dard and Premium. The classification is determined by
the minimum requirements to be met concerning the
tinting power of the wet and dry film and its resistanc
to abrasion. These specific requirements relate to the
tests set forth in other standards approved by the AB
(Brazilian Association for Technical Standards).
The standards also provides for other requirements,
such as posting a note on the paint container with
information on the product and its manufacturer,
as well as application instructions. “The NBR 15079
standard was the first official statute providing for
technical paint specifications to be passed in Brazil
in 2004. Since then, it’s undergone reviews that bot
improved it and adapted it for the new reality in th
marketplace. The latest review is taking effect upon
publication thereof by the ABNT, which is expected t
take place within the next few days,” says Gisele Bon
fim, technical manager and environmental officer
at the Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers,
known for short as Abrafati.
As a result of this revision, Economy latex paints are
now to be deemed fit for indoor use only. Standard
and Premium paints, for their part, which deli-
ver better yields, hiding power and durability, are
recommended for use in both interior and exterior
surfaces, as they have greater weathering resistanc
