Paint Market in the Mid-West -
The force of the Mid-West
Previously known as a Brazil’s agri-
business region, the Mid-West has
been proving itself a major indus-
trial center, boosting growth and
creating business opportunities.
Mid-Western towns are developing,
and, as part of that process, new
business are gaining stature. The
coming of several industries to the
region has brought along a series
of investments, which for their part
are bringing in foreign currency
and progress, while adding to the
region’s economic growth by crea-
ting jobs and providing the popula-
tion with better opportunities.
Stimulated by the expansion of
Goiânia, Goiás as a the Mid-West’s
urban center at the new stage of
Brazil’s development, the condo
market in the state capital has
been experiencing solid growth to
meet the demand for housing units
from both Brazilians who migrate
from other states to Goiânia and
“Goianians” who seek more secure
options for their families.
Therefore, both vertical and hori-
zontal residential condo projects
are growing. In addition, commer-
cial condos are also growing at a
fast pace, as consumers and custo-
mers seek security and mobility in
their shopping, hence the increase
in number of shopping malls and
office buildings.
Goiás is now the Mid-Western state
with the most business in building
and construction. Over the past few
years, the state capital of Goiás has
become Brazil’s second largest city
in number of horizontal condo de-
velopments, where the apartments
under construction are estimated
at 11,000.
Expansion
The Mid-West region is going
through an intensive urbanization
process. In the 1970’s, the rural
population represented about 60
percent of the region’s total po-
pulation. In just ten years’ time,
that rate dropped to 32 percent,
and then it continued to fall, until
it reached 15.6 percent in 1996.
In the year 2000, 81.3 percent of
the population were concentrated
in urban areas. That progression
was caused not only by a rural
exodus, but also an increase in the
migration flow from other Brazi-
lian states to Mid-Western urban
centers. Such new configuration
has demanded large investments in
urban infrastructure and services
from the states.
That way, of all the businesses that
are substantially growing in the re-
gion, one has been developing at a
very fast pace, especially in the last
decade: paints and coatings.
The demand from building and
construction has led to a wides-
pread of paint companies, which
currently amount to more than 30
paint plants in Goiás competing
for the regional market with major
players.
Interview - AkzoNobel in the
spotlight
AkzoNobel was recognized at the
presentation of the “Oscar” of
Brazil’s paint industry with four of
the 15th Paint & Pintura Awards,
including for Best Manufacturer of
Decorative Paints and Personality of
the Year - Official —presented to its
president for South America Jaap
Kuiper (the two other awards were
for Personality of the Year - Logis-
tics, and Personality of the Year -
Research & Development, presented
to Celso Guilherme Mohr, analyst of
materials, and Elaine Poço, director
of R&D, respectively).
Constantly investing in its various
units in Brazil and South America,
the company is carrying out an
awareness campaign for a heal-
thier market. According to Kui-
per, the industry needs to adjust
product prices in the Brazilian
market because they have been
stagnant for practically five years.
“What we want is an open, honest
and transparent policy to adjust
retail prices in general as a way of
sustaining innovation, brand value
and investments in shops. We are
promoting that, while hoping that
our competitors will understand it
and do the same for the benefit of
the marketplace.”
For AkzoNobel’s president, the
award for Best Manufacturer of
Decorative Paints comes at an
important time and indicates that
the company is on the right path.
“We are now making long-term
investments and insisting on a
consistent, robust pricing policy,
which perhaps will cost us a little
volume in the short term. However,
everybody will benefit from it in
the long run. But it takes courage,
vision and a bit of patience. It’s
