Special and Effect Pigments - Gloss and
Effects Impart Sophistication to Paints and
Coatings
People in the marketplace are looking for pigments that
feature differentiated effects and high performance,
while being made from sustainable materials, adding
value to end products and delivering a sophisticated,
de luxe appearance.
Special and effect pigments are a success in a variety of
industries due to their colors and distinguished effects,
but their most relevant applications are in automotive,
protective and powder coatings, decorative paints,
printing inks, etc. These pigments differentiate and add
value to the end products to which they are applied,
delivering appealing visual effects and thus standing
out from conventional products.
These types of pigments also stand out for their spe-
cial properties, such as differentiation, visibility and
the variances that their molecules/structures undergo
under certain circumstances to result in special effects.
“Pigments for the paint and coating industry have to be
free of heavy metals and toxic substances, eco-friendly,
and compliant with international standards, such as
REACH and RoHS, as well as FDA and ANVISA standards
for food contact,” says Braschemical’s sales director
Liliane Schwab Leite.
In addition to environmental concerns, the paint indus-
try seeks innovative pigments and novel visual effects.
Tomeet this demand, effect pigment colors, gloss levels
and textures are based on the current automotive and
architectural trends, changes in society’s behaviors and
the requirements of other industries where high-perfor-
mance products and sustainable solutions are sought.
Other important and often essential features of special
and effect pigments include weatherability, good light-
fastness and high chemical strength. “Most of the industry’s
applications call for high-quality pigments. In addition, the
latest trends involve UV-curing waterborne systems featur-
ing high chemical strength,” says Cristine Lopes Camargo,
technical sales manager, Coatings, Colormix.
Concerning color trends in Brazil, the FIFA World Cup is
expected to exert some influence next year, strengthen-
ing yellow and green shades, while decorative paints and
printing inks are expected to lean towards shades of gold.
“That, however, will be of little effect on metallic pigments,
so we believe there won’t be any major changes from what
we see today. Automotive coatings will follow the Brazilian
consumers’ more conservative taste in car colors, with a pre-
dominant share of metallic effects in silver, as well as several
shades of gray and a few specific metallic colors. No radical
changes are expected to occur in the use of metallic effects
in architectural and decorative paints either. Protective and
industrial coatings continue being detached from trends,
as their applications prioritize the technical functionality of
aluminum pigments,” says Aldoro’s sales manager Antonio
Labecca Filho.
Biocides - Effective Protectionwith a Sustainable
Component
Essential for protecting paint and coating formulations, bio-
cides have been more and more appreciated in the Brazilian
market due not only to their key points of difference, but also
to their high effectiveness and the trend towards solutions
featuring lower toxicity and minimal environmental impact.
The biocides market in Brazil and Latin America evolves
constantly and points to growth in demand for low-toxicity
performance biocides over the next several years, follow-
ing the international trend. “Approximately 27,000 tons
of biocides per year are consumed in Latin America, where
Brazil is by far the largest market for this kind of product. The
development in this market segment is essentially based on
the increased demand for more sophisticated products that
stems from economic stability and the emergence of a new
middle class, which has been changing per capita consump-
tion values. This market is expected to experience annual
