Theafternoon’sopening lecturewas followedby“Qual-
ity Control: Why Test?”, delivered by lecturer MAST’s
president andCEOMarcoStorel.
The theme for the last lecture, delivered by RadTech
SouthAmerica’smanagerofoperationsRobertoCaforio,
was “UV-Curing Paints: Trends and Applications”. The
UV (ultraviolet) and EB (electron beam) technologies
are present in several situations in our lives, although
we cannot notice them. Theyareused inour homeand
officefurniture,cars,appliances, telephones,magazines
andbooks.Severalapplicationsofthesetechnologiesare
becoming increasingly important in industrialprocesses.
Radiation-curing systems gainmore ground day after
day thanks to their typical highproductivity, lowenergy
consumption,smallareastakenupbymanufacturingpro-
cessesand,perhapsmost importantly, theirsignificantly
reduceduseofsolvents,whichcontributestohealthand
environmentalprotection inatimewhensustainability is
more than just an idea, but anecessity.
Emulsions - TheMainBinder inFormulations
In paint formulations, emulsions are themain binders
of fillers, pigments and other ingredients used, while
impartingkeypropertiesandperformance tocoatings.
Several compoundsareused inpaint formulations, such
as emulsions, pigments, fillers, solvents, coalescing
agents, additives and biocides, in order to provide specific
application,storage,productionandendperformanceproper-
ties.Of all thesecomponents, emulsionsareoneof themost
important, as theyare responsible for film formationand for
binding fillers and pigments, while withstanding substrate
expansions and contractions without cracking or flaking.
“Oneof themain advantages of using this kindof system is
theuseofwater insteadof organic solvents, as the concern
aboutenvironmental factors isbecomingmoreapparenteach
day,”stressesJoséMarcosQualiotto,BASF’sdispersionsand
pigmentsmanager for SouthAmerica.
All of theseadvantages have led thedemand for emulsions
to increase considerably in the Brazilianmarket, thanks es-
pecially to theexpansionof housingprojectsand thedevel-
opment of new applications. “That notwithstanding, Brazil
consumes only about a third of what developed countries
do, such as the United States and Japan. We anticipate a
bright future for the emulsionmarket, as new applications
and technologies arebeingdevelopedwhichwill boost the
demand foracrylicemulsions foruse inmetals, buildingand
construction, and industrial coatings, for example. In actu-
ality, the evolution in this area is still crawling inasmuch as
changes arealsoneeded in concepts, focus, habits, and the
conductofpolicies forour cities,whicharepracticallyaban-
