The current requirements of paint manufacturers in
choosingmineral fillers really need tobe taken into ac-
count by their suppliers, so that they can improve their
products and even come upwith innovations tomeet
their customer needs. “Without a doubt, key require-
ments includehighpurity,which shouldbe inexcessof

othermaterials,particularlyabrasiveones,being freeof
contaminantsand/orabrasivematerialsthatrapidlywear
out process equipment, leading to high maintenance
costs, a degree of fineness for the finished product to
avoidgrinding (simply by dispersion), and the ability of

While suppliers of mineral fillers keep developing their
products with a view to meeting all customer needs
and requirements, thecurrenteconomiccrisishasbeen
impacting the market. “There has been a decrease in
salesvolumes,aswellasadownturn innew investments.
However, thedifficulties imposedby theeconomicenvi-
ronment requirecompanies tooptimize theirprocesses
and costs and to bring alternative products into the
marketplace.Even in theseuncertain times, severalnew
developments are underway, and we expect them to
contributetoexpandingthemarketfromtoday’s levels,”
saysKymeraGroupdirectorPauloTomedi.
Inspiteoftheeconomicdifficultiesthecountryhasbeen
experiencing, Okyta technical quality manager Mario
Henrique Rebouças says that any company providing
customers with quality products, while assuring their
deliveryandaneffectiveafter-salesservicetohandleany
nonconformities,will haveapromising future. “I realize

BIOCIDES - PROTECTION FROMPACKAGINGTODRY
FILM
New developments remain in high demand when it
comes to biocides, notwithstanding the critical situation in
which Brazil’s economy finds itself today. Among themain
requirements of paint manufacturers in choosing a biocide,
efficiency comes in first, followed by lower toxicity, to the
extent possible, and low odor, according to Karina Zanetti,
of Miracema-Nuodex’s technical support team. “We must
alwaysmake itourbusiness to recommend toeachcustomer
a biocide that acts against themicrobiota inherent in their
product.That’s thefirst item tocheckbecause ifweuseapo-
orly sizedpreservative,wecancreatecriticalmicrobiological
problems thatwilloftencall forcomplexsolutions.Our focus
is on specifying biocides that will not leave any margin of
error forcontamination tooccurbecauseonce thathappens,
studying the problem and coming upwith a solution takes
time.Microbiological testsdon’talwaysprovidequickresults,

The paint and coatings industry also needs products that
deliver greater value formoney, without impacting theenvi-
ronment,accordingtoPolystellqualityassuranceandtechnical
coordinatorCecíliaCavalcante.“Ideally,thosefactorswillhelp
tooptimizetheproductionprocess,whileextendingtherange

Evolution in the biocide business will take place following
on two paths at the same time: finding natural assets, and
developing increasingly efficient formulations that provide
excellentprotectionwhileposing lowerriskstohealthandthe
environment, according to LuizWilsonPereira Leite, marke-
ting and international business director at Ipel. “We’requite
advanced in this regard, having replaced inour formulations
all compounds that are subject to any restrictions (despite
beingnotprohibited), suchasEPOsandsolvents.Developing
intobeingabletomakeefficientmicroencapsulatedproducts
at affordable costs is another form of evolution, lowering
occupational andenvironmental risksand improvingproduct
efficiency.Over thepast several years, our effortshavebeen
focusedon these topics, andwe’renow starting to reap the
rewards. We’vemanaged to successfully introduce our pro-
ducts innewapplications, impartingadditional functionalities
to theproductsofour customers.”
